Edythe (Eydie) Fitzhugh

(July 5, 1934 - November 5, 2018)

Edythe (Eydie) Fitzhugh began publishing “Indy’s Jazz Scene: Fitzhugh’s Jazz Event’s Calendar” – a jazz community newsletter in the 1970s. The Newsletter announced jazz performance events, commemorated the passing of jazz musicians and supporters, informed readers about and encouraged them to visit local jazz venues and national as well as local jazz festivals.

The newsletters linked jazz musicians, jazz enthusiasts and the established jazz community through articles on jazz clubs, music and festivals. As a frequent patron of the clubs and music on Indiana Avenue, Eydie loved the great atmosphere and music at Al’s British Lounge (1969-1975) and the music performed by Al’s Three Souls and Aretta La Marre Bush (singer).

“The one thing people always liked to order at the Lounge” says Fitzhugh, “was polish sausage and dill pickles.”  Eydie Fitzhugh served as secretary of the board of the Jazz Action Coalition in the mid-80s and continued throughout her lifetime as an enthusiastic supporter and promoter of the jazz scene in Indy.
