Larry F. Wiseman

(June 25, 1943 - March 3, 2002)

Larry Wiseman was one of the Midwest’s top lead trumpet and jazz players. Both of his sons, Steve and Jason also became trumpeters. Larry was known for his soaring sound and stamina. He was also known as a bit of a jokester.

Throughout his musical career, Wiseman studied with Carmine Caruso, Vincent Cicowicz, Ray Crisara, and Dominic Spera. As a professional musician, he toured and played in many Broadway musicals including The Secret Garden, My Fair Lady, and Porgy and Bess.

He taught at Indiana University-Purdue University at Indianapolis and has given clinics at Indiana University, the University of Wisconsin, and the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. Larry was an adjunct professor of trumpet at DePauw University from 1993 until his death. He was a member of the DePauw Faculty Brass Quintet and performed with the DePauw Faculty Jazz Ensemble.

Wiseman's legacy lives on in the many young musicians whose lives he touched in the classroom and through audiences worldwide who were treated to his performances with the Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra and the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra. He has also performed with orchestras in Cincinnati, Chicago, Louisville, and Milwaukee.

Wiseman performed with Frank Sinatra, Woody Herman, Andy Williams, Duke Ellington, The Glenn Miller Orchestra, Henry Mancini, and The Temptations. He also played with the John Von Ohlen - Steve Allee Big Band, The Big Band Of Al Cobine, The Blue Wisp Big Band, Dominic Spera, The E.R. Big Band, and the Winds Of Indiana. And, he recorded with Dionne Warwick, The Spinners, The Blue Wisp Big Band, and the Steve Allee Big Band
